Lower branches are removed to effectively raise the crown. This can be done for many reasons such as the lower limbs interacting with objects, this is also a very useful treatment where shading is a problem as it allows the light to come in under the tree and lastly lifting the crown it then lifts the trees canopy from the bottom up.
